We keep hearing the GOP talk about Job Creators and how we have to protect them. Apparently these people are both Mighty Titans Of Industry, and tiny hot-house flowers that need our love and protection. I'm not sure how they can be both, but that's the story.
Now, according to the myth, these folks are the source of jobs. For this reason they are revered as gods of capitalistic culture. And like any primitive culture, the GOP insists we must pay tribute to them, lest they smite our economy in their wrath. The GOP insists that if we just sacrifice enough virgins to them, in the form of tax breaks, that the Gods will smile, and create jobs with a wave of their divine hands. It's just that simple folks.
Now, not to be sacrilegious, but I think the truth is a little different.
If you take a real entrepreneur, he or she will always seek an opportunity to create income - they don't do it to be magnanimous. They want to make some money. A person like that creates a job for one reason alone: they want someone to help them increase revenues for their company.
If you hand a person like that 1 or 2 or 10 million dollars, but provide no opportunity to make money, they will not create jobs with it. They will keep it, or look for opportunities elsewhere.
If you hand a person like that a huge opportunity, but no money, they will very likely dig the money up somewhere through venture capital or some other mechanism, and start the ball rolling.
The idea that pumping money to the upper income class, and hoping they'll create jobs is completely bogus. If no one is buying anything, there is simply no way they'll risk capital trying to make anything, or trying to sell anything.
So - rather than give these Titans a ton of money, it make far more sense to insure that people at the lower end of the economy have jobs and paychecks. Any way you can do it. They will spend the money, and guess who benefits? The Titans, who will make bloody well sure they take advantage of the opportunities that are present.
The wealthy are not Job Creators. The consumers are.
