You're probably right - though I remember years when certain Caribbean islands were repeatedly clobbered. Or Florda in 2004, when the state was hit by about 5 hurricanes - including Frances and Jeanne on practically identical paths across the state, just three weeks apart.

Hurricanes are more affected by high and low pressure weather systems (blocking highs) which change often than by ocean currents. They are also affected by upper level wind currents which can shear off the tops of hurricanes which also change dramatically. They are also affected by humidity as well which can change from day to day.
