DAVID BENOIT Warren Buffett's latest bet on the state of American finance will return a little less easy money than he got during the financial crisis, providing evidence the banking world may be struggling but is still better than it was three years ago.

While the Oracle of Omaha is still expected to make a nice profit on his $5 billion investment in Bank of America Corp., the definitive return—coming in the form of a guaranteed dividend—is significantly less than he made on deals with such blue chips as Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and General Electric Co. three years ago.
