On Sunday, the office of Rep. Joe Wilson announced that he had postponed his annual district tour because of “his recent possible contraction of Lyme disease.” On Wednesday, it was reported that the South Carolina Republican has been hospitalized.
WLTX.com in his home state reported that he was being treated for what it called an “extended fever.” According to the site, Wilson contracted the illness while working in his yard.
Wilson is best known for one of the more polarizing events of the first year of Barack Obama’s presidency, shouting “you lie” at Obama as the president addressed a joint session of Congress in September 2009. Wilson subsequently apologized — “While I disagree with the president’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the president for this lack of civility” — though the incident sparked a surge in donations to him.
Wilson, 64, represents South Carolina’s 2nd District, a coastal region that includes Hilton Head and Beaufort. He was first elected in 2001 in a special election.
It is not known which hospital he is in.
