I tend to think of M2M as involving a machine that normally would not be connected to wireless networks. But because of an added module or sensor that can communicate with both the machine and the wireless network -- voila, the machine can now communicate with the world. Of course this is just one example, as M2M can also include entire wired networks, appliances, buildings, etc.
