This gal, Jan LaRue (she was on Thom Hartmann today making her case), actually believes that if the gun laws in the UK were as relaxed as they are here in the US, that there would NOT have been nearly as much violence during the recent riots in London and other cities around the country and that the four deaths that resulted there could have been prevented if the people had just been given the chance to be armed. Her argument was if the 'good people' (shop keepers and store owners) had been allowed to own guns, then they would not have had to worry about their shops being firebombed or threatened by 'bad people' who only had baseball bats since who in their right mind who put a baseball bat up against a gun. She completely rejected the idea that if the gun laws in the UK were as lax as they are here that many of the 'bad people' would also have had guns and that knowing that the shop keepers were armed would not have stopped the really bad elements from going ahead and escalating things anyways, particularly if they themselves were armed.
It was when she started to make that tired old NRA claim that "when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns" that Thom jumped in and pointed out that if she really believed that then that would totally contradict her original argument that if the 'good people' had guns than the 'bad people' with only baseball bats would have had second thoughts before causing any trouble. Her comeback was that maybe some people had been killed by guns and it was just not reported. Thom's response was that trust me, if there had been any shootings by hooligans or shopkeepers, that that would have made the news.
It was amusing to listen to Thom take her argument apart piece by piece yet listen to her go on as if everything that he was saying would not have been applicable in the scenario she was advocating.
BTW, she started out in a losing position when she opened with the claim that dozens of people had been killed by baseball bat wielding hooligans until Thom pointed out that only 4 people had been reported as having died, 3 when they were struck by a car and the 4th one, he had no details on. She then admitted that she hadn't really tried to find out how many people had actually died but from all the reports that she had seen and read about all the baseball bats that had been sold by the stores that she just assumed that there must have been some people killed by them. That was when the wheels started to come off her 'wagon' and it was all down hill from there.
