Unlike West Coast earthquakes which while frequent (we've had 5 tremors so far today in just the L.A. basin), those back East tend to be felt over very long distances primarily because the Earth's crust is basically a solid, unbroken piece and therefore tremors can travel a long distance before they are attenuated by the cracks and breaks in the ground. Whereas here in SoCal, where the Earth's crust is like a broken piece of china, unless you're literally on top of the epicenter, you may hardly feel anything, even from a 6.0 if it's further then say 60 or 70 miles away.

Very unusual, even felt in Chicago.

Amtrack checking tracks, bridges & tunnels, they have shut down service in northeast areas. clo
