They are saying when an earthquake hits in the east, the ground is harder thus the shake has more impact.
Unlike the westcoast, the ground is softer & buffers the tremors. clo

Richmond is EASILY a two hour freeway drive.

But the quake was only 4 miles deep, and that can make a big difference.

The 5.5 aftershock I felt in Guam, the one that made me guess that this was a 5.0, was fifty miles deep and well out to sea. This one was farther away, but not deep at all. And it lasted quite a while. After it was "over," after I'd posted here, people came into my office to talk about it - and I could *still* feel it.

But I might have been feeling the building. I'm six stories up, and I'm sure the building continues to shake for a while after the earth has stopped.
