NEW YORK (AP) -- Wells Fargo plans to test a $3 monthly fee for its debit cards starting this fall.
The San Francisco-based bank said the fee will be applied to checking accounts opened in five states starting in October. The fee would be in addition to monthly service fees ranging from $5 to $30 that Wells Fargo already charges.

Zim:
I am reminded of something that happened to me some
years ago . . . Bank of America was pushing their
'free debit cards'. . . So I went ahead and let them
send me one. Never used it, then a $1.50 service
charge appeared on my statement. I went ballistic.
I about had that poor lady at the bank in tears -
"Make this Charge Go AWAY !" She couldn't, but she
could make the card go away.
So, no debit card for me.
And then I get to thinking. Banks stand to save a LOT
of money if they can get lots of customers to use
debit cards - no paper checks to process. Less money
to pay a dude to load in ATM machines . . . (because
fewer people will need cash) . . .
And here the banks are trying to save money AND charge
me for the priviledge.
I don't think so.
The bankers will have to pay me to use a debit card now.
Zim.
