Nicely done.
Whatever caused America to be pre-eminent is probably over. The culture which introduced Mark Twain, Emily Dickinson, Louis Armstrong and Singing in the Rain to the world is now the one which offers up strange characters like Donald Trump, Sarah Palin, JayZ, Eminem and Lady Gaga - and bizarre policies which have exacerbated the mess. Some of these things must be for local consumption only, as - to me at least - they are repellant. And yet - there are probably as many or more smart and impressive folks in the US as there have always been. So where are they?
There's no turning the clock back, of course. One hopes the creative destruction yields up a bit more creation and a bit less destruction in the future. This is a country with some wonderful history, especially during the twentieth century. How benign the US once seemed - if only in the shapes its culture took. But it appears to me to be in a lean spell at the moment in which the open channel has been lost. Some of the arguments are just woeful.
Bush was a tower of wisdom next to some of these folks.
Sad as it was, somehow the public re-elected the last buffoon in '04... I'm not even sure it was an actual election or was Diebold the "decider"?
This current crop is a pretty sad reflection on making any sort of progress. So we'll end up with two decades lost, sliding back in technology, education, further religious leanings that seem destined to drive the Nation back to the 50s or before...
So we've gone for the hope and promise of JFK, to the new hope of BO, which so far is stalled, and I see no future leadership so far...
Can we as a people afford a multiple decades reversal? What are we leaving our Grandkids?
