I'm sorry about your son, clo. I hope he makes the best use of his second chance.
He needs to appreciate how close to death those cigarettes brought him. If he's mature about it, he'll give them up. But if, even after all he's just gone through, he's got the "bulletproof" mentality that plagues most 20-year-olds, then he needs help.
I think your letter and phone call were just what he needed. Now someone needs to watch over him for a few weeks. Or, better yet, pull him into a different environment while he recovers and detoxes.
