...one of the shames of my life is that I spent a brief stint in management with T. I only took the job because I thought I could make a difference. It took me 18 months to find out I couldn't. The machine eats anyone who thinks outside the box or who doesn't know and sing all verses of the company song all day long. It was a great learning experience for me. I learned that everyone who isn't in management knows exactly what to do about every problem, but once ya actually have the job, nothing ya thought would work will actually work.

...another thing I noted is that I was smarter than my second level and my second level was smarter than my third level. I think this trend goes all the way to the top.

...as far as managers resolving problems on their own, they don't do that. What they spend their days doing is trying to position to take credit if anything goes right while maintaining a position that allows them to avoid blame if anything goes wrong. That and enforcing chickenshit rules that keep productive innovative people stifled and helping the union protect the jobs of the worthless.

ribit, over my time with AT&T I talked to quite a few middle and upper level managers. It never ceased to amaze me how little they knew about dealing with people or what the company actually did. I never met one that I thought could have resolved a customer problem on his own.
