Zim, I probably told you this before. When I was laid off from Western and before I went back to work for AT&T, I went to a local college and took some 'college' courses. I finished the math classes, a year long two course class, in about a month. It was the same stuff I had as a freshman in high school. It would not have taken so long except I did not know you could take the tests early. In my opinion, college is a waste. It just teaches what students should have been taught in grades 1 to 12. America's school system has gone to heck in a hand basket.

We were talking at work today . . . and a subject
related to 'the good old days' where a body could
expect to remain employed with the same company
for a lifetime . . .

I've been employed with my current employer thirty
years now.

One of the Machinists, who's been there 35 or more
years had held a number of jobs before coming to work
here . . and he said 'we got it made' - air conditioning
when its hot, heat when its cold, our paychecks
have never bounced . . . and he's right.

Sadly, that is becoming more a rarety than the norm.

And, our employer is moving the same direction as
the 'rest'. Our company pension is no more. (It was overfunded - and we all got annuities or cashed out -
dealers choice . . .) But the new guys coming in will
get no pension - 401K only.

The economy went to pot . . . no raises for us for
two years. Adding insult to injury we had to take
unpaid days off - first to help get the company
through the first unprofitable time ever and lately
in an attempt to get profitability up to where
'they' want it.

There has been 'affirmative action' in action here.
They call it 'getting diversity' . . . . we've had
some good people get a break . . we've had some lulu's
who never should have been employed be made managers. (One
was made my boss . . he didn't last long. He wasn't
qualified and the 'higher ups' thought he could do
the work formerly done by two. Now we got a sharp
cookie in for my boss - and they hired a replacement
for the second boss.)

I miss those days . . . you do a good job and you
have a job for life. Nowadays? government mandates
that force one to hire incompetent nincompoops.
College degrees that are meaningless. (We created
our own pre-employment test for techs because we had
hired a clown with a good degree who didn't
know how to do anything.)

I'm rambling.
