WASHINGTON — Take in a dollar. Spend a dollar and no more.
That's the concept behind a balanced-budget amendment that Congress must vote on sometime after Oct. 1 but before the year's end.
The vote is part of debt ceiling legislation signed into law Tuesday by President Barack Obama, following Senate approval earlier Tuesday and House approval Monday night.
Supporters figure a balanced-budget amendment is a remedy to the federal government spending more than $1.40 for every dollar it takes in. Opponents fear it will result in deep cuts to government programs.
The House approved the debt ceiling deal 269-161 Monday night with the support of San Angelo Rep. Mike Conaway.
"While this deal is not perfect, it shows how much House Republicans have changed the culture in Washington and paved the way for bigger changes," Conaway, a Republican from Midland, said in a statement.

Well, yes, balancing the budget will require deep
cuts in spending . . meaning LOTS of asinine
government programs should be axed. Governmental
stupidity NEEDS to be eliminated.
