Enter Brad Smith, Microsoft’s general counsel, who didn’t take the insult lying down. He tweeted late Wednesday that Google had in fact been invited to the party — but snubbed the offer.
“Google says we bought Novell patents to keep them from Google. Really? We asked them to bid jointly with us. They said no.”
Frank Shaw, Microsoft spokesman, then jumped into the fray, tweeting a snapshot of an email in which Kent Walker, Google’s general counsel, said “a joint bid wouldn’t be advisable for us on this one… I appreciate your flagging it, and we’re open to discussing other similar opportunities in the future,” Kent added.
The patent arms race just got a little more interesting.
