The Republicans have the advantage in these last minute debt ceiling negotiations since they know that no matter what happens, in the end the President and the Democrats will do what's necessarily to avoid causing any long term harm to the country or it's citizens. While on the other hand the Democrats know that the Republican don't really give a damn as long as they're able to gain a political advantage and if their supporters (corporations and billionaires) are not hurt has much as the average person on the street is. The Republicans have ALWAYS been able to accept the premise that the 'ends justify the means' since they've been able to leverage that so many times in the past and as long as at the end of the day, someone else was hurt more than their selves and their supporters, they can declare victory and move on.
