When I play ping-pong with my eleven year old, I always beat him. Years ago, when he whined that it wasn't fair, I drilled a huge hole in my paddle and played him. He could usually beat me after that . . . but he was so embarrassed at winning that way that he asked after only a few games to play with a normal paddle again.
Some people, even adults, haven't learned this lesson. "Fair" means that everyone plays under the same rules. "Unfair" means different rules for different people. Charging people more in taxes because they are superior earners is not "fair." The idea of fairness has been so badly abused over the years that most of us don't even recognize unfairness when we encounter it anymore.
