bim24, the report states Apple could save $3-$10 per handset based on an estimate of ~500M phones in the next four years. Looking at just this estimate, Apple can recover it's cost in four years and still own the golden goose. That includes the engineers, future inventions, spots on technical committees and standards boards, and all the current goodies from video compression with Atilla to gateway architecture for femtocells with PicoChip.
The report continues on to say that Apple, armed with newly acquired IPR, could be a huge nightmare for GOOG. Here's the exact text:
Apple could create issues for the Android ecosystem: through litigation and
licensing, Apple could cause the free Android OS to actually become a burden for OEMs,
forcing them to become more conservative in their aggressive pricing plans. This is likely
to slow the price cuts Android OEMs are likely to bring. So rather than a $150 Android
smartphones, we could see a ~$200 device that is less likely to hurt a lower-cost iPhone.
Your $10 coupon analogy would have to be altered in some way to reflect the Apple/IDCC scenario. Perhaps the $10 coupon would allow you to eat more than one meal, all the while forcing your biggest enemy to suffer hunger and malnourishment. That would be one heck of a coupon.
