"But wasn't it obvious what they were going to do?" I don't think to the extreme that they'd damage the country's economy to attempt to obtain their goals. I live in a GOP stronghold that elected one of those Tea party members. Today that Member is vulnerable. I don't think voters thought they'd try to privatized Medicare, that they'd vote down a one time Social Security payment. Our Member did both and refuses to compromise on the debt ceiling. Voters will be reminded. Any voter that allows themselves to be educated on the issues and not just listen and believe all those scripted "talking points" will be more likely to consider an alternative.

Hi tkc,

I hope you are right.

But wasn't it obvious what they were going to do? And yet the electorate voted them in.

As it is, we've been saved from their dogmas because the Senate and the President are not going to sign up for them.

I doubt the tea party can win the presidency. But they can be effective in preventing necessary actions via the House. And I'm not convinced they'll get themselves chucked out at the next election. They seem to have roughly half of the Republican votes, which is enough to win lots of seats.

Meanwhile, the US runs very real risks due to the inability of its government to act.
