My retirement check is basicly an annuity. I was offered a cash buy out in place of it. I put pencil to paper and figured out that if I collected the checks for just 9 and 1/2 years, I would collect more than they were offering. At the time I was planning to live at least 20 years. I went for the annuity. It is a personal thing and who know what is best. A friend had health problems and I think his best bet was to take the buyout. I think he only lived four years. In the case of married folks, the wife gets half if the husband dies and I knew plenty of folks that if they took the buyout, the wife would have it spent within five years.
