June retail sales inch up 0.1%, beating forecasts

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) - Sales at U.S. retailers increased 0.1% in June, the Commerce Department estimated Thursday, beating forecasts of a 0.2% drop. Sales in May were revised slightly higher to a 0.1% fall from the initial estimate of a 0.2% decline. Despite the better-than-expected headline, the data shows that consumers are pulling back given the weak labor market and other headwinds. Core sales, excluding autos, gasoline and building materials, rose 0.1% in June. This is the smallest gain since July 2010.
