U.S. House fails to overturn switch to energy-saving light bulbs

U.S. House Republicans on Tuesday failed to stop the enactment of new energy-saving standards for light bulbs they portrayed as yet another example of big government interfering in people’s lives.
Beginning next year, labeling approved by the Federal Trade Commission will emphasize how much light a bulb emits, not how much energy it uses. Because newer bulbs use less energy, wattage is no longer a good indicator of brightness. The new standard is lumens.
For instance: A compact fluorescent bulb that's as bright as an old-style, 60-watt incandescent is rated at 800 lumens. The old 100-watt bulb equals 1,600 lumens.
The FTC's new Lighting Facts label shows brightness first, followed by an estimated yearly cost and the average life of the bulb. Energy use – wattage – will appear last.
The label also will indicate "light appearance." That refers to how warm, or yellow, a light appears, compared to a cooler, blue hue.
The GOP bill to overturn the standards set to go into effect in January fell short of the two-thirds majority needed for passage. The vote was 233-193.
