I don't think the "fairness" doctrine is necessarily a good idea. Sometimes there aren't two sides to an issue and giving two views equal weight becomes preposterous: a discussion of evolution would not be balanced by the views of creationists or the folks who think the earth is balanced on top of turtles. The first is science. The others something else.
I concede that Fox News reveals the flaw in imbalance. But "fairness" isn't always the best solution either.
The media is a huge issue in this country. Or rather the lack of transparency is. We need to bring back the Fairness Doctrine and media ownership rules.
Things worked well for 50 years after the Great Depression because our predecessors knew how to handle excessive wealth and influence. Until certain elements started dismantling the lessons.
