OCU,

I think McConnell is feeling the heat, maybe from the business class?
Maybe some folks are letting him know the republicans look like their feet are stuck in concrete & they will lose the Independents, along with normal republicans unless they act rational?

He's trying to dodge a bullet, if it hits Obama all the better (for them). clo

Clo,

I don't see how this is any different than the so-called '14th Amendment solution' which was kicked around last week and which Republicans were threatening to impeach Obama if he attempted to use it to do an end-around so as to prevent a default even if Congress failed to pass a debt-limit bill.

Looking at it another way, is this McConnell attempting to avoid having the Republicans take ANY responsibility whatsoever with respect to the deficit and the debt ceiling and therefore setting Obama up so that when he does have to do something unpopular with the American people, that he can sit back and say that it's 100% Obama fault and that if the Republicans had been given the chance to do what they had wanted originally that all of this would have been avoided? I just can't believe that he's that Machiavellian. I think it's more of him just trying to avoid having to look like the bad guy to anyone. As a famous philosopher once observed, "There's no decision like no decision."
