...if the taxes wer in place and nothing else had changed, there would have been more revenue. Thing is that if the taxes had been in place people would have invested less, hired less, spent less and there would have been fewer jobs and there would have been less collected in tax revenue and on top of that there would have been more demand for govt services.

GWB tax cuts & the aftermath

In FY2001 spending was $1,862.8 trillion; by FY2009 spending was at $3,517.7 trillion - more than $1.4 trillion more than what was collected in taxes.

Analysis by Citizens for Tax Justice claims that the Bush era tax cuts resulted in $1,918.9 trillion in lower revenue from FY2001 through FY2009, and that the total cost if implementing the cuts (including interest payments on debt) was $2,141 trillion.
