Montana governor: Exxon focused on shareholder liability after oil spill

Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Tuesday that everything had not according to plan after an Exxon Mobile pipeline burst, spilling oil into the Yellowstone River.

“A year and a week ago, I called in all of the agencies in state government and said, ‘let’s have a mock drill right now,’” Schweitzer recalled. “What happens if an oil pipeline bursts in the Yellowstone River right now?”

“I was assured that these private pipeline companies and these oil companies work together and they strategically place equipment around the country, near these pipelines. And when there’s an emergency, they all come together and work together until the disaster is fixed,” he explained. “Nope. Didn’t turn out that way.”

“If you wait long enough, this oil will dissipate. And, of course, the interest of the state of Montana to protect this river and the wildlife is not perfectly aligned with Exxon Mobile whose primary interest is to protect the liability for their shareholders.”
