Why is it the GOP seems to think he's gone to far, when the truth is he hasn't gone nearly far enough?

Because he's trying to make things better. The GOP publicly declared that their #1 goal is to deny him a second term (per Mitch McConnell and others). Thus they are deliberately trying to make our economy as much worse as possible in hopes that the economy will be completely tanked around November 2012.

If this is not what they're doing, they'll need to prove it. From a macroeconomic standpoint, all of their policies appear designed to trash the economy. (1) Slow government spending in a recession? Check. (2) Encourage large companies and the wealthy to save (i.e., pull their money out of the economy)? Check. (3) Diminish corporate spending by diminishing anti-pollution controls? Check. (4) Refuse to fix the cause of our current crash by regulating U.S. investment banks? Check. (5) Refuse to ameliorate the housing crisis by considering only supply-side fixes? Check. (6) Refuse to bring job creation proposals up in the House of Reps? Check. Yada yada yada.

Not that there aren't a bunch of Dems helping them -- including the Obama administration where it comes to the investment banks. The corporate welfare they're getting puts all of our people welfare, medicare & medicaid, and food stamps programs -- combined -- to shame.
