Chavez cancer upends Venezuelan politics

Chavez on Thursday said he had undergone a successful operation in Cuba to extract cancerous cells and was on the road to full recovery. Chavez said the medical process was ''slow and careful'' and he was on the road to ''full recovery''.

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's socialist leader Hugo Chavez acknowledged he had surgery for cancer, shaking the political system he has dominated for more than a decade and alarming supporters counting on him to win re-election in 2012.
