These things harm the fabric of the discussion. They are neither sincere nor authentic. They are done in the interests of personal wealth. Seemingly a valid enough goal.
But not for the distribution of knowledge. Public goods and ambitions sometimes conflict.
Private desires are the root of much that is constructive but also of many evils. Money distributes algal blooms as surely as it allows farmers to put the phosphate on their fields in order to deliver a richer crop.
How do we assess the value of an action? Not all consequences are within the scope of our authority. We will always have our butterfly effect.
At least we can avoid deliberate harm. And yet how many of us have the patience, like a Jain, to sweep the ground upon which we are about to step.
Worst of all, sometimes we are presented with the choice between harmful courses. Between surviving or permitting something better to survive, by visiting harm upon another. The warrior's burden. The only decent answer to the anthem for doomed youth.
A world made impure by time, ambition and circumstance, even when we might aspire to its golden rule. We survive. And yet we strive for something more. For the light beyond the sunset. For the knowledge which satisfies. For some unblighted truth.
