An unemployed Army veteran was arrested Wednesday in the cold-blooded massacre of four people during a Long Island pharmacy robbery, an official said.
Laid-off shipping clerk David Laffer and wife Melinda Brady were hauled from their Medford, L.I., home by heavily armed officers from the Suffolk County Police.
Laffer, 33, and Brady, 29, had not been charged by early evening and investigators were tight-lipped about the evidence in the case.
But Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy praised cops for making an arrest in the worst mass killing in the county since 1974, when Ronald DeFeo gunned down his parents and four siblings in Amityville.
Meanwhile, a close friend of Brady's told The Daily News that Brady had a prescription pain pill habit and that Laffer had recently lost his job and health care coverage.
"This past weekend Melinda was trying to find out if anyone knew what hospital she can go to to get a scrip for pain pills," Joanna Martino said.
The massacre at Haven Drugs in Medford happened Sunday.
The potential break in the case capped an intensive three-day manhunt for the murderous maniac.
