Patricia Kluge files for bankruptcy
Former socialite Patricia Kluge seems to have hit rock bottom.
The ex-wife of late billionaire John Kluge, known for the extravagant parties hosted at her Charlottesville, Va., estate, has filed for personal bankruptcy protection.
Kluge’s financial woes have been apparent for a while, as she’s been very publicly downsizing—selling her jewelry, art, furniture and gowns at auction to support a struggling winery. The 62-year-old and her third husband William Moses “listed business obligations as their chief debts” in the bankruptcy filing, according to the AP.
A lawyer for Kluge and Moses said, “They're getting on with their lives, trying to discharge their debts and start over."
Kluge managed to blow through quite a fortune. After splitting from her husband in 1990, she was considered to be “the wealthiest divorcée in history” as she acquired the family’s mansion and a massive settlement.
Shortly after the divorce, Kluge was rumored to be dating then-Virginia Gov. L. Douglas Wilder. In 1989, a year before their marriage ended, the Kluges gave $200,000 to Wilder’s gubernatorial campaign and raised another half-million dollars for him from their friends.
