John McCain was an early and persistent supporter of cap-and-trade efforts to reduce the greenhouse gases (mainly carbon dioxide) associated with climate change. So was Newt Gingrich, who went on to make a YouTube video ad â€“ with then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, no less â€“ where he said, â€œOur country must take action to address climate change.â€

Now, Republican presidential hopefuls are racing in the opposite direction â€“ disavowing support for policy measures on climate â€“ even any sense that thereâ€™s a problem to be addressed.
