Nixon vetos voter I.D.

A veto of significance by Gov. Jay Nixon out of Missouri Friday that he could wield to help rouse an otherwise dispirited base: Voter I.D.

Nixon's rejection of legislation that would have required voters to show a government issued photo I.D. attracted plaudits from liberals and should be a winner in the African American community, a demographic that the Democratic governor has had a rocky relationship with.

Republicans have pledged an attempt to override it and ultimately voters will have their say on an amendment to the state constitution, but the veto is a rare nod by Nixon to base politics. (Another instance was his veto of the GOP's redistricting map. That was overridden.)

Even with all his inherent problems, one plus potential GOP nominee Peter Kinder brings to the table is his ability to siphon off black votes, especially in St. Louis, where the lieutenant governor has built solid relationships with African American leaders over the years.

Nixon also threw party activists a chunk of red meat Friday night at a St. Louis party dinner, telling attendees he will "keep opposing right-wing extremists. They wanted Right to Work and we said no."
