PHOENIX (AP) — The sole survivor of a shooting spree in southwestern Arizona says all she could think of as she lay bleeding from seven gunshot wounds was that she was going to die.
Linda Clatone told AP from her Phoenix hospital room Friday that she was jarred awake at 5 a.m. that June 2 morning by a loud knock at the door.
When she answered, 73-year-old Carey Hal Dyess shot her in the face, neck, chest and shoulder as she cried out, "Why? Why?" and put her arms up to try to stop the bullets.
Dyess fatally shot four others that morning before turning the gun on himself. He targeted his ex-wife Theresa Lorraine Sigurdson, her divorce attorney and others who knew her.
