That graphic is somewhat misleading since Social Security and much of Medicare is NOT really part of what people think of when they're talking about the 'budget', particularly when the discussion turns to the the deficit. These are items, particularly Social Security, which has it's own source of funds. In fact, since the day Social Security was enacted, NOT one single dime has been added to the national debt as a result of the cost of Social Security, either in the benefits it has paid out or the cost of administering it. And while Medicare was originally conceived as being paid for in a similar manner, with the increase in healthcare costs and the ridiculous non-price-negotiation policy of Medicare 'D', this is just not possible today. So while it is true that these are part of what the Federal government spends money on, it's misleading to compare it to other programs and areas as if they are all covered by the same source of revenue.
