One of my bosses from years ago, was a ball-turret gunner on a B-24 in the Pacific. He was just a bit too young and too short to be a pilot, but he fit one of those Sperry Ball Turrets perfectly. While he certainly had a certain mental determination about him (he was head of our R&D department and an avid chess player) he was about as far from the image of a 'Marine' or Marine-like person as one could possibly get.
