Applications for jobless benefits rise slightly
427,000 workers filed new claims for compensation last week

By Jeffry Bartash, MarketWatch

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — The number of jobless Americans who sought unemployment benefits rose slightly last week, according to government data, reflecting little change in a brittle U.S. labor market.

The Labor Department on Thursday said applications for unemployment compensation increased by 1,000 to a seasonally adjusted 427,000 in the week ended June 4. Initial claims from two weeks ago were revised up by 4,000 from an originally reported 422,000.

Economists surveyed by MarketWatch had expected initial claims to dip to 419,000.
