Defense Secretary Robert Gates landed in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Saturday to visit troops and confer with leaders as part of an overseas farewell tour ahead of his June 30 retirement. POLITICO’s Mike Allen, traveling with Gates, reports that the secretary was greeted by Gen. David Petraeus, the U.S. commander in the theater. Gates's swing comes at a time of flagging support for the war among Democrats on Capitol Hill, as President Barack Obama finalizes plans for a drawdown, to begin next month, of the 100,000 U.S. forces now in the war zone.
