Several tornadoes were spotted around communities near Chico, California during a severe thunderstorm Wednesday afternoon. No injuries were reported.
The National Weather Service issued two separate tornado warnings for the area, about 90 miles north of Sacramento, around 5 p.m. Wednesday after a threatening storm cell dropped hail nearly an inch thick across rural areas and showed signs of rotation.
Residents and CHP officers soon began reporting funnel clouds and tornadoes snaking down from the clouds between Interstate 5 and Highway 99, but the twisters mostly avoided populated areas.
Two tornadoes appeared to touch down south and east of Ordbend, and new funnels were spotted near Durham within an hour.
