One thing for Donald Trump's short-lived presidential campaign. He was very successful in galvanizing the sizable racist wing of the Republican party with his talk of Obama's birth certificate, that Obama wasn't smart enough to get into Harvard, etc.

Newt Gingrich appears to be making a play for this portion of the GOP electorate with his recent talk of Obama being the "food-stamp President" and "he's trying to turn the country into Detroit". It will be interesting to see when a desperate Mitt Romney adopts a similar theme.
