Some Explaining to Do

Newt Gingrich was on meet the Press today, explaining why a man on his third marriage, married to his former mistress, exemplifies Christian values. He also explained why calling Obama the "Food Stamp" president wasn't a racial reference. The did not get around to explaining why He was for bombing Libya when Obama was not and was against it once Obama started bombing Libya. They also touch on Newt's previous support of cap and trade and healthcare mandates.

Friday, Romney explained why Romenycare was good and Obama care is bad even though he admitted that there is not so much difference.

Also, I believe, on Friday, Ron Paul was explaining whether he supported Jim Crow or not. It's not clear what his position is, even after he was done talking.

None of the current republican contenders has as much as 20% support amoung republicans. This may change now that Hucklbee has dropped out. However, for those that remain they all have the burden of either having to explain their moderate positions to the far right or their far right positions to moderate swing voters... Of course I would not necessarily lump Ron Paul in with the far right, but his vision of total libertarianism, probably requires the most explaining of all.

Beyond the presidential campaign: John Ensign has to explain why he should stay out of jail, John Kyl has to explain why he shouldn't be getting the cell next to Ensign's, those state senators from Wisconsin will have to explain to the voters why they really were elected to go Union busting/not deal with the economy.

In total, for the next election, the republicans will have to explain why the family values party is lead by so many folk with real family values problems, why, in the midst of this most tepid recovery, their focus has been on social engineering, why they really are better on defense, in-spite of their recent failures and Obama's recent success, why they really are better on the economy in-spite of the obvious, why they really are better on spending, in-spite of the obvious.

Newt Gingrich and "the food stamp president"

He didn't call Obama a "strapping young buck," but his slur is coded racism (and not very Catholic) just the same.

Newt Gingrich doubled down on his clever new slur against President Obama as "the food stamp president." He tried the line in a Friday speech to the Georgia Republican convention, and he used it again on "Meet the Press Sunday." It's a short hop from Gingrich's slur to Ronald Reagan's attacks on "strapping young bucks" buying "T-bone steaks" with food stamps. Blaming our first black president for the sharp rise in food-stamp reliance (which resulted from the economic crash that happened on the watch of our most recent white president) is just the latest version of Rush Limbaugh suggesting that Obama's social policy amounts to "reparations" for black people.

But when host David Gregory suggested the term had racial overtones, Gingrich replied "That's bizarre," and added, "I have never said anything about President Obama which is racist."

Republicans have done well with their quest to stigmatize social welfare programs as handouts to the undeserving, and to pretend that most of the undeserving are black people.
