This makes a LOT of sense. Instead of collecting money from hunters each year who will pay money, traipse around the woods and mostly NOT get anything but still do an adequate job of keeping the deer population down, Maryland is going to charge taxpayers $1,000 PER DEER to reduce the population. And the state's poor won't even get any "Hunters For The Hungry" (an unbelievably successful Virginia charity in which hunters donate what they've shot) meat.
Unbelievable.

Maryland is the first state to approve birth control for deer.
According to the Cumberland Times-News, state wildlife officials created policies for Gonacon's use over the past several weeks. The Times-News interviewed Paul Peditto, the director of the Wildlife and Heritage Service. ``This is the only immuno-contraceptive for deer that has federal approval,'' said Peditto. But he cautioned that the contracpetive is no ``magic bullet'' for population control.
