Foxconn Accused of Treating Workers Like Machines

ÂHandset assembly giant, Foxconn has been accused of treating its staff "like machines" by a Hong Kong based workers rights organisation, SACOM.
The organisation is also claiming that the company is demanding that staff sign pledges not to commit suicide following a series of high-profile suicides last year lead to an outcry, although it was pointed out that the suicide rate at the company is actually lower than the national average.
SACOM says that it interviewed 120 Foxconn employees during March to April, and claims that many of the staff worked 80-100 hours overtime per month, especially during the run up to major product releases by Apple, one of Foxconn's major customers.
Foxconn has said that its work policies are audited regularly, but accepted that local problems could occur and would be dealt with if it is notified of them.
The company promised an investigation into the claims in the report, if the authors provided it with identifiable information of where the complaints are coming from.
