The chart below reveals a crash in the Global X Silver Mining ETF (SIL) relative to silver bullion. Silver mining stocks, as represented by SIL, have lost about one-third of their value relative to silver bullion since early December of last year.
This chart shows that speculation over the past 6 months has been almost exclusively focused on silver bullion, and that silver mining equities were generally expensive relative to silver bullion late last year. It may also reflect some rational skepticism on the part of equity traders/investors about the sustainability of silver's rapid price increase. If so, and if silver performs the way equity investors apparently think it will, the competence of silver bullion investors who fail to exit at this time is painted in a dim light. Silver is now badly overpriced, and the chart shows that equity investors saw the situation for what it was many months ago, even as bullion investors continued bidding up silver's price.
