Americans are not powerless. They just have to be willing to slay some sacred cows. I don't think it will take much to get the US back on a viable track, if it wishes to.
On the other hand, I think the US is essentially a bunch of different countries with various distinct regional belief systems trying desperately to remain a single one. And maybe unity isn't actually the best solution here.
I don't think Texas is wicked for flirting with the idea of independence. The West Coast doesn't think much like the flyover country. The North East is a very different place from the South. Alaska ain't Hawaii.
