dg, I don't know that much about them either, but I read they have an automatic cutoff if the wind's too strong. Does sound like they could use a squirt or two of WD-40, in your scenario. I wonder of the utilities can remotely turn them off if they can't take all the electricity they're generating.

It's astounding with all the hype over renewable that the grid hasn't been updated. All the money's going down the rat holes (aka banks).

Linda, I have noticed that when the wind picks up and gets up above about 25 to 30 miles an hour, many of the wind turbines are shut down. I assume either the company that owns them or an internal mechanism shuts them down. I wonder about the quality of manufacture because sometimes with a small amount of wind, a few will be turning and most will not. That suggests to me that some have less friction than others. But then, what do I know? I never worked in that field.
