There are no more 'special' pensions for members of congress (haven't been since 1985). They have to now pay into Social Security and Medicare like everyone else, however they do have the same opportunity as any other federal employee to join the equivalent of a 401k where they can make contributions and where a portion of it will be matched by the government. Now don't get me wrong, they probably have a greater opportunity to 'feather their nest' with gifts and honorarium than the average citizen, but that depends on their own abilities and creativity. However, stay a few extra months in Congress will gain a person very little long term, other then perhaps trying to set things up for someone else to be appointed/elected in his stead.

...I have been trying to figure out why he hasn't just resigned and got it over with. My guess is that he has to stay in office until that particular date before he can draw a lifetime of pension and benefits.

...IMHO, when a politician resigns from office for any reason other than health, or if they become ensnared in some legal or moral morass, they should have to pay the cost of the election to replace em.

That would include Newt Gingrich and his crowd and anyone else.
