...I have been trying to figure out why he hasn't just resigned and got it over with. My guess is that he has to stay in office until that particular date before he can draw a lifetime of pension and benefits.

...IMHO, when a politician resigns from office for any reason other than health, or if they become ensnared in some legal or moral morass, they should have to pay the cost of the election to replace em.

That would include Newt Gingrich and his crowd and anyone else.
