The market capitalization of HTC exceeded the NT$1 trillion (US$34.47 billion) mark on April 20 when the company's share price surged by NT$60 or 5% to close at NT$1,265 on the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE). The market capitalization was the third largest on the TSE, trailing after only Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry).

Based on HTC's better-than-expected performance in the first quarter, Goldman Sachs and Credit Suisse have raised their target prices for HTC shares to NT$1,600 and NT$1,300, respectively, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report. HTC's share price edged down NT$10 or 0.8% to close at NT$1,255 on April 21.

While the global market trend is favorable to the popularity of smartphones, the prospect for HTC to boost its global market share to 15-20% from the current level of 10% lies on its capability to dent market share from other brand vendors and push its sales to emerging markets, according to industry sources.

Although Nokia is expected to see its market share further eroded by other brands, iPhone's snowball effect on the global market and aggressive efforts by Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics (LGE) to push sales of their Android smartphones will add pressure on HTC, the sources asserted.

In the China market, HTC has stepped up its cooperation with China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom to promote its smartphones using its own brand name, instead of the Dopod brand name of its partner, the sources indicated.

For the second quarter, HTC's shipments is expected to top 11-11.5 million units with revenues growing 20-25% sequentially to NT$125-130 billion, according to an estimate of the sources.

HTC is scheduled to hold a conference call on April 29 to discuss its first-quarter results and the business outlook for the second.
