A 10-year-old boy escaped through the window of a minivan as his mother drove herself and three kids into the Hudson River in a tragic murder-suicide, authorities said today.
The boy then swam to shore and ran for help.
Lashandra Armstrong, 25, drove off the pier at about 7:50 p.m. in upstate Newburgh, but not before one of her sons was able to escape and contact firefighters.
Armstrong's 10-year-old Lashaun ran into the City of Newburgh Fire Department firehouse and notified firefighters that his mother had driven her minivan into the river along with his two brothers and baby sister, Fire Chief Michael Vatter said.
Had it not been for Lashaun, police said they would have taken a lot longer to locate the woman and her kids.
When police and firefighters recovered the van an hour later, they found the mother and her three kids -- Landon Pierce, 5; Lance Pierre, 2; and 11-month-old Lainaina -- dead inside the vehicle.
Armstrong lived about six blocks from where she and her children died, police said.
The domestic altercation occurred about 10 minutes before Armstrong drove into the river.
The bodies were taken to the Orange County Medical Examiner's Office.
